Breaking in the new shoes

Time for a quick run to break in our shoes! I have to admit I'm a little out of practice, so we took it slow (25 minutes of light running, and walking for 2-3 minutes when I had a stitch!).

Ran along Willow to our new place (8th and Monroe), then looped round to run down to 3rd and Monroe, then back home.

New running shoes!

We bought our swanky new running shoes, based on advice from Coach Jane and the guys at the sports stores. Yesh bought Brooks' Adrenaline GTS 6 from Fleet Feet in Hoboken (we totally recommend these guys for their awesome service and knowledge).

I bought Reebok's Premier 3D Lite Trainer (based on my high arch and weak ankles!) from Paragon in Union Square (they have a great selection, but we were really disappointed with their customer service).

Foot Test

Before we headed out to buy our running shoes, we decided to do the wet foot test to figure out what shape feet we have.
  • Step 1: wet foot
  • Step 2: step on a blank piece of paper
  • Step 3: match footprint to the ones in the guide that Coach Jane gave us
Coach Jane's guide was pretty similar to this one: http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=481

Looks like mine is normal but with a high arch. Hmmmm....

Asha Kick-Off Meeting

Yesh and I made our way to one of the Asha kick-off meetings at the Leela Lounge this afternoon. We were given an intro to the Asha NYC/NJ Marathon Training Program and got to meet Coach Jane, as well as some of the mentors (who've run the marathon in past years -- and survived to tell the tale!).

What we learnt:

  • get the right shoes
  • start moving (walking, running, anything... but get going!)
  • start eating right
  • we can do this!

How we felt:

  • inspired
  • excited
  • pumped up and ready to go!
First team run is on May 13th in Central Park.

Warm-ups

Time to start getting into shape. Yesh signed up for Bike New York, and I took a less painful route by signing up for weekly Bollywood dance classes!
